WHY DO I TEACH?
As a life long learner and self-professed nerd, I enjoy taking highly technical information and breaking it down for others to understand. Through explanation and examination I am able to reinforce my own understanding through teaching others.
My teaching philosophy is to challenge, motivate and prepare students for television industry standards in a hands-on collaborative learning environment. I enjoy being inspired by my students, not only through their creativity and energy but through their drive and tenacity. Building a network of creative people that are inspired to better themselves have strengthened my spirit and opened my mind to a world of endless possibilities. My students are motivated by my energy and passion for the craft of live television. My professional background in Sports Broadcasting and Community Media brings authenticity and experience to the class lectures and activities.
Students in my classroom learn how to collaborate with their peers in a creative environment. They build a foundation of knowledge through lectures, discussion, practical demonstration, equipment operation, training exercises and individual assignments. My goal is to prepare students for standard practices they will encounter in the television industry. Training exercises allow them to practice on the equipment and get comfortable with the tasks and terminology associated with each position. When students gain confidence they are able to push the limitations of their abilities. Challenging students to take ownership of the work gives them a sense of pride.
Self-discipline and self-control are attributes one needs to acquire for a successful career in the film and television. I urge students to develop a sense of professionalism and work ethic, both in the classroom and outside the studio. Treating people with respect and consideration is modeled in my behavior and expected in my classroom.
I believe that not necessarily every one has the ability teach, but everyone has the ability to learn. Discovering how to reach a variety of learners in a variety of ways continues to be my biggest challenge as a Professor. I continually explore new ideas and techniques to facilitate a greater understanding amongst a diverse population of learners.
